В нашем штате наконец заинтересовались математическим образованием учителей младших классов. Теперь все новые учителя должны сдать вот такой экзамен. Особенно приятно читать объяснения того, зачем это нужно в Boston Globe:
| "If a first-grade teacher read at the fifth-grade level, citizens would be outraged. But what if the teacher had fifth-grade math skills? Until recently, there were not similar concerns about an elementary school teacher's knowledge of mathematics. <...> Elementary school teachers must know sophisticated and complex mathematics, not just be able to do third-grade calculations. To be effective, they need to understand underlying mathematical concepts in the same way they need an understanding of English that goes well beyond being able to read "The Cat in the Hat.’’ <...> Some [perspective teachers] have said that changing the requirements so quickly is unfair to students already in the higher education pipeline. This is nonsense. If we know teachers lack the skills they need to be effective, it would be unfair to their students not to address the problem as quickly as possible." |
